It was Built in 1901 and designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon. the museum consists of two main floors displaying a collection of 125000 items and in storerooms about 160000 items like papyrus, coins, statues, tables, and coffins (sarcophagi).

The museum contains artifacts dating back to more than 5000 years ago and from all dynasties of Egypt, which features artifacts from presynaptic, prehistoric, Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom, Late Period, and Greco-Roman era. The museum displays a rare collection of 5000 years of art, which is considered the largest most precious collection of Egyptian art in the world.
